Post-Attunement Guidelines

Typical reactions during and after a Reiki attunement:

  • Increased energy.
  • Inner peace, warmth… within and/or around the body.
  • Gentle tingling sensations, hands – hot.
  • Sense of energy flowing in and around body.
  • Clearer senses.
  • Less stress and emotional problems.
  • Improved physical health.
  • Increased ability to deal positively with stressful situations.
  • Sense of "coming home" and of being in touch with "the flow" of life.
  • Deepened spiritual awareness and experiences e.g. seeing or sensing auras, energy, colors, etc.
  • Increased clarity of mind and deeper intuitive or inner wisdom.
  • A general feeling of being more whole, healthy, and happy.
  • A more complete sense of "self".
  • A release of toxins.
  • Cleansing of body and mind.
  • A short, minor illness (cold, flu).
  • Sweating.
  • Headaches.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Need to sleep more.
  • Need to drink more.
  • Temporary loss or increase in appetite.
  • Vomiting/nausea before/after eating processed foods. (very rare)
  • Some other minor physical problems.
  • Some type of emotional release (crying, laughing).

Personally, except for one of the attunements I have received I typically get what I call an energy "high". An increase of energy, warmth surrounds me, lots of tingling sensations, my palm chakras opened up wide and were very hot. After one in particular, I felt like I sprouted wings and was flying around the room for a couple of hours. And mind you this was after being up all night with only a wee bit of napping. The attunement I felt different reactions to left me feeling very susceptible to cool and cold temperatures. I am typically the one who is always hot. I was freezing and shivering so badly that I left the room until the Reiki master finished attuning the rest of the students in order to not disturb anyone else. The susceptibility to cold temperatures lasted a couple of months (during the winter in the desert). That particular reaction has gone away since then.

To improve your Reiki channel:

  • Consume less meat, alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes – at least for a few weeks after.
  • Meditate a little every day. i.e. 20 minutes each morning and evening.
  • Regular light exercise: walking, swimming, Yoga, Tai Chi.
  • Set a clear, honest intent for the greatest good before the treatment, and say/think a short prayer if you wish.
  • Keep a relaxed and open body and mind during the treatment.
  • Try not to mentally control or direct Reiki, other than your original intent (unless you are Second Degree). Keep things simple, and let Reiki do the work.
  • Trust that Reiki will go to where it is most needed, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • Remember regular self-treatment and receiving Reiki from others is important.
  • Try not to expect the results that you want, be patient, and enjoy but do not get too attached to good results!
  • At the end of every treatment remember to briefly dedicate or direct the future effects of your good karma (positive actions) to some good cause! (I feel this is effective only if you believe in karma whether it is good or bad karma.)

Give yourself daily self-treatments regularly:

  • While watching television
  • While sitting in a park, or in church
  • During tea or lunch break at work
  • When traveling by bus, train, or in a car sitting in a traffic jam
  • While reading, studying, or memorizing
  • When walking anywhere, standing in a line

It is recommended that the length of your daily self-treatments equal an hour. Some people may not be physically able to treat themselves for a complete hour. In that case, treat for as long as is possible, but do what you are able to. For those who do not "have the time" can start off with treating yourself before you fall asleep or after you wake up or follow the above recommendations. If Reiki makes you drowsy, please do not Reiki yourself in your car.
