an aesthetic of utility

She held it up for me to see, her face bright and intent.

“Chain,” I said.

“Garment!” she replied.

I had to concede the point, shiny twisted-link steel chain has a great many uses.

For me, the beauty in any item of utility is directly related to its use. A beautiful knife is not one with glorious gilded fretwork gaurds, gemstone inlay, carved handle and polished blade engraved with fantastic runes. A beautiful knife is a sharp one. Good steel, with a pleasing weight and perfect balance. A beautfiul knife is that knife most suited to knife-hood and the work a knife is expected to do. A beautiful chain, suited to the hardware life of strong flexible linkage, becoming garment for beautiful flesh, is an idea to behold. Fraught with meaning, my friends, fraught indeed.
