Short 14

Number 14 was short and silly, because it has been a rough week. Next week, however, is Vacation, which means there will either be an extra big spectacular story, or an ever shorter and sillier one.

14 – The Box, or, How I Met My Wife

It was a simple white box. I was startled to find it in my room when I woke up that morning, but not especially afraid of it. Surely it would turn out to be a surprise gift from a friend, or something similar. I went to it and opened it without a second thought.

13 – The GLP

The memory fades even now, and in a few moments, I am sure it will fade entirely.

The moment I saw the numbers on the screen and realized that they matched, every single digit, the numbers on my lottery ticket, it seemed as if the world had slipped away from my feet. I stared at it for some time, then read back and forth, peering at each number in turn, looking for my error. There was no error.

12 – The Z Word

The trees around the graveyard had the kind of leaves that are dark on the top but light underneath. The breeze had picked up as they walked down the gravel road towards the gate, the little gusts turned the leaves in waves, painting pale shapes across the darkness. The effect made her nervous, she felt like she was constantly catching some movement out of the corner of her eye – someone running along the tree line, or billows of smoke rising from the ground. Her nerves were so tight by now that the sounds of her cellphone nearly gave her a heart attack.

“Two scientists conducted an experiment on a woman. They hypnotized her. When she was under, they told her that when she came into the room next, she would open up her umbrella inside the room.”

10 – Angus Kills the Monster

His father’s blade, though dirty and chipped, was sharp. It cut even through the hard metallic scales as it slipped into the flesh below and opened angry red wounds that gaped like screaming mouths. There were not many chances to try the steel against the creature’s skin, he relished the sensation when the sword made its rare, satisfying contact. It hummed in his hands with each blow.
